Overview

The eastern gem of the Cinque Terre

Among the villages of the Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore is often the first encounter with this extraordinary stretch of coastline—and for many, also one of the most memorable. Thanks to its strategic location and easy access from La Spezia, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the area, especially for first-time visitors to the Cinque Terre.

The village unfolds along a narrow valley that naturally guides the eye toward the sea, creating a distinctive landscape of vividly colored vertical buildings, atmospheric alleyways, and ever-changing views at every step. Here, convenient accessibility meets the authentic charm of an ancient Ligurian village that remains deeply rooted in its identity.

The cone of fried fish from the Ligurian Sea.

Riomaggiore’s culinary tradition blends the bold flavors of the land with the fresh taste of the sea. The undisputed king of local street food is the famous artisanal mixed fried fish cone. Freshly prepared in the village’s small workshops, it features the best of the day’s catch: anchovies from the Ligurian Sea, squid, cuttlefish, and small mixed catch fish, lightly floured and fried to a perfect golden crisp. It is best enjoyed while strolling along the waterfront, ideally paired with a glass of local Cinque Terre DOC white wine.
