Overview

The Pearl of the Riviera

Although the Cinque Terre is famous for its sun-drenched trails and swimming in the turquoise sea, the rain transforms these villages into places of poetic melancholy and intimate beauty.

For those who want to explore the Cinque Terre at a more leisurely pace, with greater comfort and a true beach experience, Monterosso is often the most practical choice. It is particularly popular with families, travelers staying for several days, and those who prefer a less hectic stay than what the smaller, steeper villages offer.

Things to dee and do in Monterosso

Relax on the Beaches

Monterosso is the only village in the Cinque Terre that offers a true traditional beach experience, with equipped beach clubs and stretches of coastline perfect for spending a day between sun and sea. It’s the ideal choice for those imagining a holiday that includes relaxation, swimming, and time spent outdoors.

Explore the Historic Center

The old part of the village preserves the authentic atmosphere typical of the Cinque Terre, with narrow winding streets, small squares, local shops, and restaurants where you can discover the flavors of the region.

Walk Along the Seafront

The more modern area of Monterosso offers a convenient and pleasant setting, with hotels, cafés, services, and a seaside promenade perfect for relaxing moments.

Visit the Capuchin Convent

The Capuchin Convent is one of the most peaceful and scenic spots in Monterosso, offering stunning views over the sea and a quiet atmosphere rich in history and spirituality.

Admire the Giant Statue

One of Monterosso’s most iconic landmarks, this large seaside sculpture is one of the village’s most recognizable symbols.

Set Out on Scenic Hikes

Although more accessible than the other villages, Monterosso is still connected to the famous Cinque Terre hiking trails, allowing visitors to alternate relaxing days with routes immersed in nature.

Experience the Sea from a Different Perspective

Boat excursions, water activities, and full days spent along the coast complete the experience for those who want to fully embrace life by the Mediterranean.

Why Choose Monterosso

Monterosso doesn’t rely on the dramatic vertical scenery of some of the other villages, but instead offers a different kind of experience—more balanced and often more comfortable. It’s the ideal destination for those looking for convenience without giving up the charm of the Cinque Terre.

Although it’s a very popular destination, especially during the summer months, its wider spaces allow for a more relaxed stay with greater freedom and less crowding compared to the more compact villages.

Monterosso is perfect for those who want to combine sea, comfort, and authenticity, experiencing the Cinque Terre at a slower, more enjoyable pace. It’s not just a place to stay, but a destination that offers a complete, relaxing, and deeply Mediterranean experience.

Gastronomy

Monterosso Sciacchetrà

Monterosso’s winemaking tradition transforms the effort of heroic viticulture into a precious, almost legendary nectar. The undisputed king of local products is the renowned Sciacchetrà, a handcrafted passito wine with a bright amber color. Produced following a centuries-old tradition in the village’s small workshops, it is made from the finest bunches of Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes, which are left to dry in the shade on racks before pressing. It can be easily found in the historic wine shops along the narrow streets, perfect to sip by the glass at sunset or to take home as the region’s authentic “liquid gold.”
